{"id":748,"date":"2007-06-07T15:12:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-07T15:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journal.electric-rocket.com\/?p=748"},"modified":"2025-04-24T17:44:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T17:44:49","slug":"book-log-the-best-american-essays-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journal.electric-rocket.com\/?p=748","title":{"rendered":"Book Log &#8211; The Best American Essays 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>The Best American Essays 2006<\/i> Edited by Lauren Slater, Series Editor: Robert Atwan<\/p>\n<p>A great collection&#8230; to start with.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights:<\/p>\n<p><i>Kinsey and Me<\/i> by Laurie Abraham, about her visit to (and testing at) the Kinsey Institute prior to the release of the recent biopic<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><i>501 Minutes to Christ<\/i> by Poe Pallantine, about a man&#8217;s search for a place in life.<\/p>\n<p><i>Death of a Fish<\/i> by Adam Gopnik, about the unintentionally philosophical backlash resulting from the death of a pet goldfish that is actually a betta. <\/p>\n<p><i>Grammar Lessons<\/i> by Michele Morano, an essay about grammar that has very little to do with grammar, and more the dissolution of a relationship.  Very David Ivesish.<\/p>\n<p><i>Lost Dog<\/i> by Susan Orlean<sup>2<\/sup>, about the amazing search for a lost dog that actually happened here in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>These are all in the first half of the book.  The second half of the book has a much more melancholic feel to it&#8230; mostly about grief, loss, and illness.  Perhaps Lauren Slater&#8217;s intention was to draw you in and then leave you wanting to slit your wrists.  Hard to say.  If so, I beat her, as I skimmed the last few essays.<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"-2\"><sup>1<\/sup>The most boring movie about sex ever made.<\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"-2\"><sup>2<\/sup>I have read and recommend her book of essays, <i>The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup<\/i>.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Best American Essays 2006 Edited by Lauren Slater, Series Editor: Robert Atwan A great collection&#8230; to start with.
