Back when we lived in the loft, we had great natural lighting, and I could
easily take pictures like this:

But in the new house, there simply isn’t a lot of natural light coming in,
and I take pictures like this:

So, I’m idly looking for inexpensive photography lighting options. I’ve
seen some 100 watts/second monolight kits from B&H Photo Video online for
around $150. Of course, one can quickly drift up into the thousands of
dollars to burn like the sun.
Do any photography buffs out there know how much oomf one needs in strobe
flashes to be able to take nicely lit hobby “portrait” shots?
Clamp lights covered in baking parchment can perform lighting wonders. Get several, they are cheap.
You’re talking about those cheap things you use to work on your car?
Baking parchment?
Okay, I’ll check it out.
I have some $9 500 Watt Worklights from Lowes to play around with too… but I need a diffuser or reflector setup…
Yup, exactly. $2 lights and a $3 roll of parchment paper. Use them to remove shadows.
Those 500 watters are only good if you are lighting up a big area, otherwise you will get lots of glare. Don’t point them at the subject. Bounce them off something, or to wash light over something.
No advice to offer, but that first pic is SO DAMN CUTE.
It’s the lighting, I tell you. In reality, he was no where near that cute.
Well, actually… he was.
