I was going to write something about the report I heard this morning about the balance of outsourcing/insourcing, but I thought just pasting an IM conversation would be better.
glenn5 (9:19:15 AM): Did you hear Morning Edition
this morning?
electricrocket (9:19:29 AM): What about it?
electricrocket (9:19:38 AM): The jobs thing?
glenn5 (9:19:54 AM): They did a story about foreign
firms that hire American workers.
electricrocket (9:20:00 AM): Yeah, I heard that.
glenn5 (9:20:01 AM): Like Kyocera.
electricrocket (9:20:23 AM): and Ingenico.
glenn5 (9:20:34 AM): I’m almost to the point of
grudgingly admitting that offshoring isn’t a bad
thing.
electricrocket (9:20:52 AM): Although, they didn’t have
any numbers from last year yet.
electricrocket (9:21:18 AM): Which is when they really
started doing this "help center in India" thing,
isn’t it?
glenn5 (9:21:43 AM): Oh, is that right?
glenn5 (9:21:47 AM): I missed that part.
electricrocket (9:22:06 AM): Yeah, it was subtle. But I
actually heard the report twice, and caught it the
second time.
glenn5 (9:22:26 AM): All I remember is that foreign
companies hired "almost enough" American
workers to completely make up for the number of
jobs that were offshored.
electricrocket (9:22:47 AM): Yeah, they quoted
numbers from 1986 to 2002 or something like
that.
electricrocket (9:23:05 AM): The numbers were pretty
close. Within a few hundred thousand, anyway.
electricrocket (9:23:55 AM): But Bush is a lying liar, so
I highly suspect anything he says. I’m withholding
judgement until I hear numbers from last year.
glenn5 (9:24:09 AM): Was Bush the source?
electricrocket (9:24:32 AM): I believe it was his
comments in a campaign speech that initiated the
report. It started with a quote from him.
electricrocket (9:24:39 AM): The numbers came from
the Commerce department.
glenn5 (9:25:16 AM): Whose Secretary is a Bush
appointee.
electricrocket (9:25:33 AM): a-HA.
electricrocket (9:26:02 AM): They coulda’ cooked
those numbers like a swedish chef.
glenn5 (9:27:04 AM): Bork bork bork!
electricrocket (9:27:13 AM): *crash*
Statistics Quote
“If you torture the numbers long enough, they’ll confess.”

100% of those polled about your comment say that that is a correct statement.
