As I read the “word of the day” entry for today (lucubration), I was ruminating on the fact that my vocabulary has been shrinking at a distressing rate since high school. A while back, when I was unpacking at the new house, I came across an old high school essay and noticed that I no longer knew the meanings of every fourth word I wrote back then, seemingly with ease.
My best guess is that while I read about the same amount now, I write considerably less than I did back then. The knowin’ is in the doin’.
So, my objective is to work the “word of the day” into a daily journal entry from now on.
The problem is, since it is daylight outside (though overcast), I cannot consider this entry a lucubration. So I have no way to work that word in. Oh, well.
Wait! I did it! Awesome.
I cannot consider this entry a lucubration.
Failure of imagination. You could’ve made this entry a reminiscence on past lucubrations.
I thought the self-reflexive “using the word to illustrate why I couldn’t use the word” to be cleverer.
But, you were mistaken. That’s a very old joke; it was even used on Mad About You, when Paul and Jamie were playing Scrabble in an episode.
Oldie but goodie
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To lucubrate. But it was dark, so she got hit by a car in the process. Very sad.
I’ve always felt the first time someone told that joke it must have been really funny.
There was a joke in there? ‘Cuz the chicken in my front yard hasn’t been seen in over a week.

Why am I getting lame high school words in my Word of the Day email? Do I need to sign up for the “premium” newsletter?
My vocabulary is hemorrhaging from my brain at an alarming rate as well. In fact, most of what I learned in college and graduate school is. Pretty soon, I’ll just be sitting here sucking my thumb, word processing the day away.

Should it be spelled “lookupbration”?
Actually I thought lucabration meant the act of being made to sleep with the fishes.
Give it a sec….wait for it….
