Not for $400 it isn’t. Show me a decent book reader for <$100 that will let me read common formats (plain text, pdf, html) from any source and I will see awesome.
This will allow you to read common formats (Microsoft Word, HTML, TXT, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PRC and MOBI files) from any source.
And really, only early adopters pay the big $$$ for these things. It’s only a matter of time before it drops, so I’m going to go ahead and jump on the Awesome bandwagon to be ahead of the curve.
It’s like oooing and aaahing when new model cars come out… ain’t no way I’m buying a new car, but eventually new cars become used and then I get ’em.
Digital information is just different than analog. It’s too easily copied, too easily distributed. The restrictions on copying or transferring are necessary in order to insure that authors and publishers are compensated for their effort.
So, is it awesome that we are offered a convenient alternative to paper books, albeit with tradeoffs (convenience for transferability or permanence)? Yes, yes it is.

Costco had a Sony eReader on sale last month, but I don’t remember for how much.
I haven’t seen them for less than ~$270 yet.
